Watering Tips & Tricks

General

  • 5 or 6 am is the ideal time for watering
  • Water as infrequently as possible: this encourages deep root growth for a thick lawn that will more effectively withstand the heat of summer. Oxygen and water in the root system is key for thick lush grass.
  • For other foliage, like trees and bushes, keep stems, leaves, trunks, and branches dry. These plants take their water in through the root system, and prosper when receiving their water through the soil. Grass is most often the only plant type that tolerates water on its leaves well.
  • Look into “cycling” your water, i.e. breaking the watering sessions up into smaller increments more frequently. The necessity for this is dependent on the type of soil in your area. Your Payson lawn care advisor can help you determine if cycling is a needed option for your particular lawn.

Trees

  • Trees are to be watered properly when the soil has dampness 36 inches deep at the dripline. A piece of rebar can be useful in checking the moisture depth, as it will only easily insert into the ground as far as there is moisture.
  • Water trees approximately one time per week during the hottest summer months, and a few times per month during the cooler spring and fall months.
  • Flowers and grass planted at the base of trees rarely thrive and tend to congest the tree itself. Mulch is the best option for surrounding a tree trunk.

Shrubs

  • Shrubs are to be watered properly when the soil has dampness 24 inches deep. A piece of rebar can be useful in checking the moisture depth, as it will only easily insert into the ground as far as there is moisture.
  • Water bushes approximately one time per week during the hottest summer months, and a few times per month during the cooler spring and fall months.

Flower Beds

  • Water at least once a week during the hottest summer months, and a few times per month during the cooler spring and fall months.
  • The soil for flowers is properly watered when there is dampness 15 inches deep.
  • There may be some variables on watering frequency or special care dependent on flower species. Work with your Payson landscape designer to plant flowers which work for your particular aesthetic purposes and needs.

Vegetables

  • The soil for vegetables is properly watered when there is dampness 15 inches deep.
  • Water at least once a week during the hottest summer months, and a few times per month during the cooler spring and fall months.
  • Tomatoes are a popular garden plant that are notorious for needing more water than others. Aim for 18 inch dampness and a frequency of every five days for watering tomato plants.

Lawn

  • Water grass at least 3-4 times per week, or 1.5-2 inches, during the hottest summer months to defend your lawn from scalding by the summer sun.
  • The soil for grass is properly watered when there is dampness 9-12 inches deep.
  • Avoid daily watering at all costs; this method of lawn care is infamous for causing incurable lawn diseases that are incredibly expensive to manage.
